Dr John Hornbuckle, Associate Professor from Deakin University talks about the collaborative projects under Smarter Irrigation for Profit phase 2. Researchers are working with industry partners and irrigators to improve water use efficiency. This is important because we have such limited resources and as irrigators we need to be able to make the most efficient decisions to product the maximum output and maintain profitability for producers and their local communities. Smart automation using field sensors to determine how much water the crop needs, data analytics and automated irrigation control has the potential to be very useful. These trials are commercial scale where researchers are able to work in partnership with irrigators to ensure systems deliver to industry needs.
