Evaporation mitigating solution for Australian cotton water storages

Research being conducted as part of this project is identifying more effective mono-layer solutions that can be used in conjunction with physical barriers to mitigate wind impacts on monolayer films, reducing water storage evaporation losses.

During the 2019/20 period the most promising monolayer product and barrier material for on farm trials were selected. Optimization of barrier material design and structure lead to a reduced evaporation in tank trials by 31%. This material used in combination with the monolayer showed an evaporation reduction of 49% in small scale trials.

Medium-scale field trials are currently underway with channel trials being conducted at the Yanco Agriculture Institute.
