Conversions to automated furrow irrigation in sugarcane can provide increased returns on both crop and water Gross Margins by reducing costs through water efficiency. Using a scenario-based approach to furrow irrigation in the Burdekin region this case study found a saving of 5 ML per ha can improve water Gross Margins by around 40 per cent. Those irrigators pumping at higher Total Dynamic Heads will generate more economic benefit and reduce emissions intensity per hectare of sugarcane.
Water savings from automation save energy costs and also enhance product sustainability from avoided emissions.
