The SIP2 project Key Learning Site Southern is looking to increase water productivity and profitability by expanding growers’ knowledge of irrigation technology and best practice management.
The project is grower driven with grower groups involved with the management and activities at each of the key learning sites located in the Lachlan, Murrumbidgee and Murray valleys. The project is utilising a range of technologies including soil moisture monitoring and automation to demonstrate best practice management.
An understanding of soil moisture and how it influences plant performance is important for irrigators looking to improve irrigation scheduling and ultimately maximise returns per mega litre in a range of irrigated cropping systems. There are a number of resources available on this Smarter Irrigation website that are designed to help producers understand soil moisture, plant available water, readily available water, soil probe site selection and installation.
This link to the Murray Valley Soil Moisture site provides details of soil moisture sensors at a number of research sites including; CWFS at Condobolin, IREC at Whitton, Southern Growers at Finley, ICC at Kerang, Berrigan and Deniliqin.
