Amjed Hussain from Agriculture Victoria talks about taking the guess work out of irrigation using simple technology. It is a three step process, supporting farmers to determine when they should irrigate, how long they should run the irrigation for and then there is a feed back system to let them know what has happened in field. The system uses satellite NDVI to assess peak pasture growth, and combines this with weather data. Using an irrigation water demand model they are then able to predict the date for irrigation. Then a soil balance model is used to calibrate the volume of water needed to reach the end of the bay. The sensors at the end of the bay tell farmers when water is where they need it.
