Simple Approach to Managing Water on Farm

Andy McAllister from Agriculture Victoria talks about a simple approach to farm scale irrigation without significant investment in sensors. It requires a basic understanding of crop water demand and the volumes of water that need to be put onto a bay itself. There is a lot of irrigation automation taking place now, but one of the biggest challenges is to really understand when and how much to irrigate. Good understanding of water flow and weather (rainfall and Evapotranspiration (ET)) conditions is important. The system fits to different irrigation systems and different soils. By using climate, soil type, simple models and some basic tools we have been able to manage irrigations to be more optimal.
